The Scent

The first thing the nose registers is bergamot, sharp and citrus-bright, cut almost immediately by petitgrain's green, slightly bitter twist. Fig leaf follows fast, and it is the detail that separates this from a standard citrus opener: it smells like a snapped stem more than fruit, damp and vegetal. Within minutes neroli takes over as the heart, and it is an intense, radiant neroli, not the thin orange-blossom water you get in lighter colognes. Rose sits underneath it, adding a soft floral hum rather than a distinct petal note. Fig returns here too, this time rounder and slightly milky, bridging the green opening and the woody base that is building underneath. As the heart fades, vetiver rises from the base and changes the whole mood of the fragrance. It brings a damp, earthy vetiver quality, more soil and root than the smoky or citrusy vetiver treatments Guerlain has used elsewhere. Cedar adds structure and a dry, pencil-shaving edge, while tonka bean rounds the finish with an almond-like, faintly sweet warmth. The surprising part is how the fragrance splits in reaction from one skin to another: on some it stays crisp and green well into the drydown, while on others the tonka and vetiver combination pushes it toward something closer to a soft gourmand woodiness. Both readings are legitimate outcomes of the same base accord, and neither cancels out the fig-neroli heart that anchors the whole composition.

This suits early autumn evenings, dinner on a covered rooftop, or a walk after sunset when the day's heat has broken.
